Paul Bettany Burst 10 Eye Vessels Filming Vision Quest
Paul Bettany revealed he burst about 10 blood vessels in his left eye while filming Marvel's Vision Quest, forcing the crew to CGI out the redness. The series is now streaming on Disney+.
You know that feeling when you're really into a scene? Paul Bettany took it to a whole new level—and paid for it with his eyeball.
While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Vision actor shared a wild story from the set of Marvel's new series Vision Quest. Apparently, he got so immersed in one particular scene that he literally burst around 10 blood vessels in his left eye. Yeah, you read that right.
The incident happened while filming a scene where his character wears a device on his head that's supposed to affect his brain. Bettany explained, "I was pretending there was a device on my head that was affecting my brain, and I just went too far—and about 10 blood vessels in my eye popped." He joked that it taught him the true meaning of "less is more." The show even displayed a photo of his bloodshot eye at the time, and honestly, it looked pretty gnarly.
Because the injury was so obvious and lasted a full two weeks, the post-production team had to put in serious effort to fix it. Bettany himself quipped, "I think the studio spent a lot of money removing it from the footage, because we'd already shot the whole scene."
There's a funny irony here, too: Bettany plays Vision, a synthezoid with superhuman eyesight, but in real life he's nearsighted and can barely see without his glasses. He poked fun at that contrast during the show as well.
Vision Quest is the final chapter in Marvel's WandaVision trilogy and premiered on Disney+ on October 14, consisting of eight episodes. Bettany returns as Vision, and James Spader is back to voice Ultron.
So, what do you think—would you go that hard for a role? Let us know in the comments!
