Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Hands-On: Hyrule Has Never Felt This Alive

GamesRadar went hands-on with the Ocarina of Time remake and came away impressed, saying modern touches make Hyrule feel more alive than ever while keeping its classic charm.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake lands on November 5, and early hands-on impressions are seriously glowing. GamesRadar attended an official preview event and came away saying Hyrule has never felt this alive.
Let's start with the visuals, because that's the first thing you'll notice. Kokiri Forest has been completely redesigned with richer environmental detail, and the area boundaries now feel way more natural instead of like invisible walls. Hyrule Field got a similar glow-up too. Lon Lon Ranch blends right into the surrounding hills, while Hyrule Castle Town packs in extra environmental detail and even more buildings you can actually walk into, making the whole world feel more worth exploring.
But the remake isn't just a pretty face. It borrows plenty of modern tricks from Breath of the Wild. Hyrule Field uses a similar camera presentation, and the menus, loading screens, and quest prompts all echo that newer style. You can also quickly pull up your equipment screen with a button on the Switch 2 Pro Controller, which makes swapping items mid-combat way more convenient.
According to GamesRadar, these changes do more than smooth out the controls. They prove this isn't a simple remaster of the 1998 original. A shoulder-following camera replaces some of the fixed angles from the old version, which makes certain hidden secrets easier to spot and brings the overall experience more in line with what modern players expect.
The outlet wrapped up by noting that the remake doesn't chase modernization for its own sake. Instead, it keeps the classic charm while improving controls and exploration. For longtime fans, it might not perfectly recreate how the game felt back in the day, but these adjustments for the modern gaming landscape are something worth looking forward to.
So, are you planning to dive back into Hyrule when the remake drops? Let us know what you're most excited to see reimagined.
