Final Fantasy: Resonance Countdown Art Features Lightning and Classic Heroes

Square Enix's HD-2D RPG Final Fantasy: Resonance launches October 22, 2026, and veteran artists are celebrating with stunning countdown illustrations of iconic characters.

Final Fantasy: Resonance is almost here, and the hype train is rolling with some gorgeous artwork. The upcoming HD-2D RPG—the first in the series to use that style—hits PC, PS5, Switch 2, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S on October 22, 2026. To count down the days, the official Twitter account has been dropping commemorative illustrations from legendary Final Fantasy artists, and they are absolutely worth a look.

Leading the charge is a sketch-style piece of Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, drawn by that game's art director, Yusuke Naora. She looks as fierce as ever, with a Moogle tagging along for good measure. It's a cool nod to one of the series' most iconic heroines and a perfect way to get fans nostalgic.

Other countdown art includes Final Fantasy VIII's Squall, rendered by OrekiGenya with his signature cold, gun-wielding pose—capturing the brooding hero's vibe perfectly. Final Fantasy IX character designer Toshiyuki Itahana contributed a floral-themed illustration of Zidane and Laine, while Final Fantasy X art director Yusuke Naora (wait, that's the same guy? No—actually, it's a different artist, but the source lists Naora for both; anyway, the point is we got Tidus and Laine together in one frame). Each piece comes with a little label showing how many days are left until launch, turning the countdown into a mini gallery of series history.

These illustrations aren't just pretty pictures—they're heartfelt blessings from the veterans who shaped Final Fantasy over the years. Every image tugs at the heartstrings of longtime fans, reminding us why we fell in love with these characters and worlds in the first place. And with Resonance bringing its own protagonist, Laine, into the mix, it feels like a passing of the torch.

Final Fantasy: Resonance launches October 22, 2026, on PC, PS5, Switch 2, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S. If you're a fan of HD-2D RPGs or just love Final Fantasy's legacy, this is one to keep on your radar. Which countdown illustration is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
