Final Fantasy 17? FF7 Remake Director Teases What's Next
Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi hints that the team could tackle Final Fantasy 17, a new remake, or an original AAA IP after the trilogy wraps.
The Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga is finally heading toward its grand finale with the upcoming big release, Final Fantasy 7: Revelation. But once that chapter closes, what happens to the team behind it? According to trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi, the studio isn't planning to just ride off into the sunset.
Speaking about the future, Hamaguchi revealed that management wants to keep as much of the current core team together as possible. The goal is simple: let everyone keep working together on another major project in the series. That's a pretty exciting thought if you've been following the Remake trilogy's development.
So what could that next big thing be? One option on the table is Final Fantasy 17. Yep, you read that right. The team is reportedly considering it as a worthwhile direction among several possibilities. But that's not the only path they're eyeing.
Hamaguchi didn't rule out kicking off a brand-new remake project either—perhaps reimagining another classic numbered entry in the franchise. However, he made one thing clear: he'd rather hand that kind of project off to another studio. Why? Because his own team is hungry to explore entirely new technology and storytelling directions. They want to push forward, not just look back.
There's also a third option Square Enix is mulling over: a high-budget AAA game built on a completely original IP. That's a pretty bold idea, and it shows the studio isn't afraid to think beyond its established franchises.
Whichever route they end up taking, one thing is certain—the team wants to focus on creating a major title for the next generation of platforms. And of course, they're hoping to surprise the player community along the way.
So, what would you rather see: Final Fantasy 17, another classic remake from a different studio, or a totally fresh AAA IP? Let us know in the comments!
