Microsoft Finally Optimizes Windows 11: 8GB RAM PCs Get Up to 40% Faster
Microsoft has significantly improved Windows 11 performance on low-spec PCs, boosting multitasking speed by up to 40% on 8GB RAM devices through smarter memory compression and resource management.
If you've been nursing an aging PC with 8GB of RAM and cursing Windows 11 under your breath, Microsoft might have just thrown you a lifeline. The company has rolled out some serious optimizations for low-spec machines, and the numbers are actually pretty impressive.
According to reports, multitasking on 8GB RAM devices is now up to 40% faster. The magic comes from a smarter memory data compression technique that keeps more of your running programs in memory, cutting down on how often they need to be reloaded. In plain English: less waiting, more doing.
The dev team also tweaked how the system allocates resources when you're actively doing something. Open the Start menu or File Explorer, for example, and Windows will temporarily deprioritize background tasks to give more juice to whatever you're clicking on. It's a small change that should make the whole experience feel snappier.
And it's not just the core OS. Microsoft Edge now launches 33% faster than before, and inactive browser tabs will go to sleep after just 15 minutes of idling to free up resources. That's a nice quality-of-life bump if you're the type to hoard 47 tabs at once (no judgment).
Microsoft says it tested these improvements on around 20,000 PCs with all sorts of configurations. Windows widgets and Microsoft 365 apps have also been optimized to sip less system resources. So yes, your budget laptop might finally feel a little less budget.
That said, Microsoft is still realistic about the limits. For heavy-duty work like professional video editing or 3D modeling, the company recommends at least 16GB of RAM. Makes sense—no amount of clever compression is going to turn an 8GB machine into a workstation.
Still, for everyday multitasking, this is a welcome win for anyone who's been putting off a RAM upgrade. Have you noticed Windows 11 feeling faster on your setup? Let us know in the comments!
