GTA 6's NPCs Are Wild: 600,000 Animations and Unique Personalities
Rockstar built a dedicated team in Los Angeles to give GTA 6's Leonida NPCs real personality, with around 600,000 animations and traits that shape how they react to you.
You know how in older GTA games, pedestrians were basically moving scenery? Pull a gun and everyone freaks out the same way. Well, GTA 6 is throwing that out the window in a big way.
In a new interview with EDGE magazine, Rockstar dropped a ton of fresh details about the game, and the NPC design is honestly kind of mind-blowing. Instead of leaning on procedural systems to crank out copy-paste crowds, Rockstar set up a dedicated team of writers, directors, and producers in Los Angeles to make the people of Leonida feel genuinely distinct.
Every single NPC got their own art design, and the studio created roughly 600,000 animations for them. But looks are only part of the story. These pedestrians are also given different personality traits that affect how they react to you, including their temper, aggression, where they are, what they've witnessed, and how you've treated them before.
Different districts have their own vibes too, with unique population mixes and professions. Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, explained that when building Leonida's population ecosystem, the dev team kept asking themselves questions like: "Who would start a conflict? How many would pull a weapon? How many would test me?"
In past GTA games, pedestrians were more like moving set dressing. The moment you drew a gun, they'd panic in the same predictable way. In this game, that one-note NPC behavior is gone, replaced by reactions that are wildly varied and different from person to person.
So next time you're strolling through Leonida, remember: the person you bump into might have a whole personality, and they might just remember how you treated them. Are you excited to see how deep this system goes? Let us know what you think!
